There are two worksheets included here: a hands-on Civic Duties & Responsibilities Scenarios Activity, and a critical thinking Civic Duties & Responsibilities Short Response.

Aligned to Florida State Standards for middle school SS.7.CG.2.2 Civic Obligations and Responsibilities.

This resource includes:
  • Read through 10 different scenarios
  • Identify whether the scenario represents a Civic Duty or Civic Responsibility
  • Cut & Paste the scenarios into the appropriate column on the worksheet
  • Using a word bank for guidance, write down which specific obligation or responsibility is being described.

Sample scenarios:

  • “Sarah hates wearing her helmet when riding her bike, but several of her friends have received tickets for not wearing theirs. She decided to follow the law rather than pay the fine.” (Obey the Law, Civic Obligation)
  • “Sometimes the news seems pretty boring, but Keisha likes to know what’s going on in the world around her. She makes a point to read one online news article every day.” (Keeping Informed, Civic Responsibility

Printing the matches on neon or colored paper makes it really pop in a binder or interactive notebook! 

The accompanying Duties and Responsibilities of Citizenship Short Response is a great enrichment activity that can either be used for the whole class or as a differentiated assignment for students who need a little more of a challenge. It asks two reflection questions on the topic of Civic Obligations and Responsibilities that will require students to think critically and introspectively. It can spark some great discussions, as well!
