This What Is Civics? First Week Back to School Gallery Walk for Civics & American Government includes:

✯ The 3-Page What Is Civics? First Week Back to School Gallery Walk Worksheet. Acting as journalists for the school newspaper, students will attend a “Civics in America” gallery and choose five exhibits to take detailed notes on. They’ll describe each image and make an educated guess on how it relates to Civics. Based on these notes, they will craft their own definition of Civics.

Then, after you reveal one final exhibit (a plaque with the formal definition of Civics, “the study of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship”), students will use this definition and examples from the gallery to write their official “report” for the school paper, answering the question: “What is Civics and why do we study it?”

✯ 20 images for the What Is Civics? Gallery Walk representing Civics, Citizenship, and Civic Duties. Each image comes numbered with its own caption, explaining the context and relation to our various rights and responsibilities. Together, these images should introduce students to many of the key concepts you’ll be studying in your Civics class, making this a great back-to-school activity to kick off your curriculum!

The images in the gallery walk represent such topics as: Voting, Volunteering, Paying Taxes, the 14th Amendment, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Press, the Oath of Citizenship, the 15th and 19th Amendments, and more!
