Start your curriculum on Day One with this Civics First Week Back to School Activity Bundle! This bundle combines three of my Civics Back to School resources: my “What is Civics?” Back to School Gallery Walk on U.S. Citizenship, my “What is the Purpose of Government?” Preamble Gallery Walk that introduces the Preamble to the United States Constitution, and my “What Makes A Good Citizen?” Citizenship Creative One-Pager. All together, students will be engaged in your curriculum from the very first week of school, making this bundle perfect for middle school Civics, American Government, and even American History classes!
This Civics First Week Back to School Activity Bundle for Civics and American Government includes:
✯ “What is Civics?” Back to School Gallery Walk on U.S. Citizenship. Acting as journalists for the school newspaper, students will attend a “Civics in America” gallery walk, complete with 20 images representing Civics, U.S Citizenship, and our Civic Duties and Responsibilities. As they peruse the gallery, they’ll complete a working definition of the word “civics” — and get a preview of the year’s curriculum as they see their government in action!
✯ “What is the Purpose of Government?” Preamble Gallery Walk. In this gallery walk, students are introduced to the six goals of government listed in the Preamble to the United States Constitution. They’ll explore over 30 images, quotes, and newspaper headlines showing government-in-action as they form their own answer to the question: “What is the purpose of government?” Then, they’ll apply the Preamble’s six goals of government to the specific artifacts in the gallery, thinking critically, making connections, and prepping them for a school year all about the Constitution!
✯ “What Makes A Good Citizen?” Citizenship Creative One-Pager. In this final activity, students will brainstorm five traits of good citizenship and illustrate each in a creative one-pager art project. (This makes an adorable bulletin board for the Back to School Open House!) Get students thinking about the responsibilities of U.S. citizenship right from Day One!
Together, this bundle contains everything you need to kickstart the first week back to school in your Civics or American Government classroom. Two gallery walks get students off their feet, exploring your classroom, and examining real-life examples of their government in action. A creative one-pager project asks students to consider the roles and responsibilities of good citizenship. I hope this bundle makes your first week Back to School a little bit smoother, as well as more engaging for your students!
The resources in this bundle are presented as non-editable, printable PDFs. Rubrics, Samples, and Answer Keys are all included.
