This U.S. Geography Digital Choice Board is a great choice-based activity that allows middle school students to conduct a miniature research project while getting creative and having a lot of fun. Perfect for Middle School Geography or American History students (and Upper Elementary, too), this Digital Choice Board can be used as homework, a cumulative project, or simply extra enrichment to your study of the fifty U.S. states!
In this Google Slides activity, students research one of the fifty states and are given a choice between six creative projects to show off what they have learned. (There’s even a Random State Generator to help students who don’t know which state to pick!) Students can cook a recipe famous in their state, create a social media profile representing their state, film a tourism commercial, draw a postcard or a new state flag, or even plan a road trip across their state, hitting all the most popular attractions! Perfect for digital or distance learning classrooms!
This resource includes:
✯ A fully digital, visually engaging Google Slides presentation with clickable buttons that makes the project easy for students to navigate.
✯ Templates & Instructions for six creative activities. Students pick one of the fifty states, do some research into the state’s history, geography, exports, attractions, symbols, and so forth, and then complete one (or more!) of the following projects:
- Map a Roadtrip: Students pick four destinations from their state, describe their geographical or cultural importance, and include photos from each as they map a virtual road trip through the state!
- Draw a Flag: Using the information they have gathered on their state’s symbols, history, and important facts, students design a new State Flag that represents their chosen state.
- Cook a Recipe: Understanding that every state has iconic cuisine unique to its region and culture, students peruse several lists of famous dishes from every state and pick one to cook up at home!
- Create a Social Media Profile: Using a template, students create a mock Instagram profile for their state, including a profile pic, unique username and biography, and three pictures (with captions!) that represent key facts they have learned about their state.
- Film a Commercial: Students can choose to create a 30-60 video advertising their state. They are given a list of criteria they must include in their commercial, including the state’s geography, main exports & economy, and a major attraction that might persuade tourists to come and visit!
- Design a Postcard: Pretending that they are vacationing in their state, students design a postcard “writing home” to a person of their choosing. They’re to include several facts about their state in their message, and design the back of their postcard in a way that represents their state!
✯ Finally, this resource includes a Research Resources slide where students can find the Random State Generator as well as a big list of resources to help them research their state.
